life & work after a career pivot

What No One Tells You About Career Pivots (Especially After Burnout)

Insights from a Former Global Marketing Executive

(Don't miss the special Income Generating offer at the very bottom.)

After decades leading global teams and digital marketing initiatives for Fortune 500 companies across more than 100 countries, I've learned that career transitions are rarely as straightforward as they appear on LinkedIn.

Whether you're contemplating a strategic pivot due to burnout, to pursue new opportunities, or revamping after a corporate realignment; the journey ahead requires more than just updating your resume.

Here's what my path from executive leadership, to CMO roles, to successful startup launches to acquisition has taught me about navigating career pivots with intention.

The Courage to Recalibrate - And How to Actually Do It

Throughout my career building high-performance teams and managing billion-dollar media budgets, I've seen many employees and executives reach breaking points.

The combination of constant travel, multiple P&L responsibilities, KPIs and the pressure to perform; creates a perfect storm for burnout - even among the most resilient employees and leaders.

What separates those who successfully pivot, from those who simply jump to the next exhausting role?

This is what saved my sanity as I pivoted.

Reflection and strategic patience.

Give yourself permission for a deliberate reflection and recalibration period.

This isn't indulgence - it's the first critical business decision of a successful career pivot.

Practical Steps for Your Pause:

Schedule a minimum of 60 days for transition (90-120 days if possible) - (I took 8 months and made the decision to burn through retirement savings, but it was worth every dollar spent)

  • Create a "career inventory" - list all key skills, achievements, and connections

  • Identify energy-giving vs. energy-draining aspects of past roles : and what you enjoyed most

  • Meet with 3-5 trusted mentors to gain outside perspectives

  • Establish a financial runway before leaving - if you can (this will be based upon your personal situation)

Acknowledge Your Expiration Date

Why do we stay beyond the expiration date of roles we're in?

This is often due to the false 'security' of a paycheck, lack of confidence to step out, uncertainty of what else to do, or the inertia of staying in your comfort zone.

Once you make a move - and get out of your comfort zone - you'll realize it wasn't all that comfortable.

After multiple executive roles with the world's largest advertising agencies, I personally needed a complete pause.

When asked 'do you feel you're on your path?' - my response would be "I don't even know where the road is anymore."

In my last two roles, I was Google's largest customer, hosted client events on their San Jose Campus, and built out and led teams around the world.

When I made the decision to pivot - I needed a freaking break.

The money and title had become meaningless. I had stayed past the expiration date of corporate work - for me personally.

The Innovation Mindset for Career Transitions - A Framework That Works

As someone who spent years in new product development, launched and helped multiple startups grow to acquisition - I've consistently stayed at the forefront of industry innovation.

I recommend you approach a career pivot with the same curious and experimental mindset that drives successful new business and product development.

Reframing Your Narrative

After working with over 250 global brands and launching multiple award winning campaigns and products, I understand the power of perception and strategic positioning.

Your career pivot requires the same disciplined messaging as any market entry strategy.

From Achievement to Realignment

Instead of defining yourself by past titles or achievements, realign your past experiences with new potential offerings.

How can you reapply your knowledge and experience to new endeavors that become part of your pivot?

My ability to build high-performing and engaged teams while driving innovation, has proven to be invaluable across both corporate environments and startups.

How do you uniquely solve problems? What skills are you particularly good at that come natural to you + and you enjoy?

The answers to these questions will help you redefine yourself with a look to the future.

From Expertise to Exploration

The same curiosity that made you successful in previous roles becomes your greatest asset during a pivot.

Frame your transition not as leaving something behind, but as applying proven methods to new opportunities.

After leading international expansion into global markets, I applied those same strategies when helping startups scale globally.

Ask yourself: What processes or experiences from your previous accomplishments would bring fresh perspective to new endeavors or independent professional pursuits?

Moving Forward: The Strategic Integration

The most successful career pivot builds on your past success.

Your next chapter isn't about abandoning your expertise but about applying it to new opportunities in more aligned work.

The journey won't be linear. It will include some trial and error.

Growth doesn't happen when you're standing still or in your comfort zone.

Embrace the process of becoming the next and best version of yourself.

Final Tip:

Track your journey in a pivot journal. Document your vision, dreams, insights, breakthroughs, and lessons.

You can use this insight in the future - to help others on their path, and to remind yourself how far you've come. (I still look at mine occasionally from as far back as 2008! - and I'm always blown away and filled with gratitude.)
