the myth of job security

Why You Need to Take Control of Your Future: Steps to Take Now

Humans are creatures of habit. We resist change.

But with the rapid acceleration of technology and economic changes - we’re being required to change. Being open to adapt, evolve and prepare are survival skills.

The notion of job security is an illusion.

The promise of a stable, long-term career with one company is a thing of the past. As a result, you must take control of your own future.

True security lies in your ability to adapt, upskill, and seize opportunities in the face of change.

The illusion of job security stems from an outdated belief that hard work, good performance reviews, and loyalty to a company will be reciprocated with unwavering commitment and protection.

The harsh reality is that businesses are driven by their bottom line and will make decisions based on their financial interests, regardless of the impact to you. Look more closely at the terms used to represent employees = ‘human capital.’

Over the past 12 months, 96% of organizations have taken some kind of downsizing action. A report by Randstad RiseSmart projects 92% of employers are preparing for layoffs in 2024.

This is a time for you to be awake, aware and proactive.

Unfortunately, many don’t want to believe it can happen to them. Over confidence in their role, stature or skills can catch many blindsided. Don’t let this happen to you.

Mass layoffs are being seen across the board from Microsoft, Google, Amazon, IBM, to Tesla - even the US Army. Also see tech industry specific layoff details at Layoffs.fyi.

With 92% of the workforce affected, just about every company or organization is on the list. Whether they call it downsizing or restructuring their workforce, they’re eliminating roles and streamlining for profitability.

With downsizing and rightsizing, dedication and performance don’t carry much weight. It’s strictly a numbers game to maintain the company’s profitability targets.

The rapid pace of technological advancements is making many roles obsolete. New roles that may be created as a result, require a different skillset.

Two reputable articles to note are: The Economist, "The future of work: Is the 9-to-5 job going the way of the dinosaur?" January 2021.

Harvard Business Review "The Future of Work: The Rise of the Adaptive Employee." In a world where job security is no longer guaranteed, they say individuals must take responsibility for their own career development and continuously upskill to remain relevant.

To take control of your future, you must cultivate a proactive and adaptable mindset. This involves taking responsibility for your own career development and actively seeking opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Embrace lifelong learning, whether through formal education, professional development courses, or self-directed study.

By continuously investing in yourself, you become more valuable to current and potential employers. You also prepare yourself to step into your own more stable income generating position of a one-person business.

A key aspect of taking control of your future involves developing an entrepreneurial or solopreneur mindset, even if you don't intend to start your own business.

This involves assessing and stacking your skills. Think creatively and be proactive in identifying your areas of interest with work separate from an employer.

By adapting an entrepreneurial mentality and approach to your work, you become more resilient and adaptable.

You are better equipped to identify, seize or create opportunities that align with your goals and values. See an offer I currently have available here. I've done the legwork so you don't have to.

Redefine your concept of job security and recognize that true security lies in your ability to create value and navigate change.

Rather than relying on a single employer or role, focus on building a diverse portfolio of skills, experiences, and relationships that you can leverage regardless of where you are generating an income.

Embrace the idea of a "portfolio career," where you may have multiple income streams or engage in a combination of full-time, part-time, and freelance work.

With 207M content creators worldwide, the creator economy is currently valued at $155B. This market is projected to reach $500B by 2027.

The internet has blown the doors wide open for individuals to create multiple income streams and profitable one-person businesses.

The myth of job security remains a dangerous illusion that can leave you vulnerable to the whims of a volatile job market and indiscriminate employers.

Take control of your future, continuously invest in yourself, build a strong network, and cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset.

By doing those things, you can create a more resilient and fulfilling career path.

Ultimately, true security lies not in a single job or company, but in your ability to adapt, grow, and thrive in the face of change. Get started now here.
